what is the sumoth challenge?
The SuMoth Challenge (SUstainable MOTH) is a student-driven competition focused on designing, building, and sailing sustainable and efficient foiling boats. The challenge follows simplified rules inspired by the International Moth Class Association, encouraging teams to innovate while adopting eco-friendly practices like REduce, REuse, and REcycle.

Taking place during Foiling Week in Malcesine on Lake Garda, this event brings together students and industry professionals to exchange ideas, explore climate action, and promote goals like quality education and gender equality. It’s a unique platform to shape the future of sustainable sailing through hands-on innovation and collaboration.

A Moth is a high-performance, single-handed sailing dinghy renowned for its hydrofoil technology, which allows the boat to „fly“ above the water at much faster speeds. Originally part of the International Moth Class Association (IMCA), Moths for the SuMoth Challenge are governed by a unique set of „box rules“ that define maximum dimensions but leave room for innovation and creativity in design.

Hydrofoils
Similar to airplane wings these wing-like structures lift the hull out of the water, reducing drag and allowing for higher speeds.
